【谷崎潤一郎　新々訳　源氏物語】（10巻）
装丁の作品展「空想装丁図書館」展に今年も参加しています。源氏物語は日本が誇る古典文学で、特に谷崎源氏と呼ばれる谷崎潤一郎訳は、現代語でありながら古典的日本語の美しさを堪能できる最高峰の文学といえます。ですが、この物語は光源氏と女性たちのジェンダーギャップの物語でもあります。今の世なら考えられないほど、登場する女性たちは社会にも恋愛にも縛られています。そこで私は彼女たちを自由な姿で源氏物語の中に甦らせてみようと思いつきました。私なりのジェンダー問題についての考えです。また今回のために取り寄せた古書は、元々の装丁がとても美しかったので、文字や桜の図案はそのまま活かそうと決めました。チャーミングなラインを意識して、プロポーションは気にせずのびのびとした10人の女性をデザインしました。

葵の上も、空蝉も、六条御息所も。窮屈な十二単衣は脱ぎ捨てて。

古書の上を自由に生きる彼女たちは私たちの姿でもあります。「自分らしさを開放して、そのままで生きていこうよ」というメッセージを込めています。一緒にしおりも作成しました。文章の中で自由に過ごしているのがイメージです。

"The Tale of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu, Translated by Junichiro Tanizaki 
This series of book binding works was created for "The Imaginary Binding Library" exhibition. I designed 10 different book jackets for the binding of "The Tale of Genji" which is a famous classical literature in Japan. It is a beautiful story about life of Mr. Hikaru Genji, but also a story which shows gender gap between Mr. Hikaru Genji and the women who appear the story. Unthinkable in modern times, The women were restricted by the society and love at that era. The story consists of 10 volumes of stories. So I recreated 10 women freely on each book jacket designs. I was conscious about the charming body line of them and created 10 liberated women in the book jackets of this ancient story. Because of the original binding was so beautiful, I decided to make use of an original title design, illustration, and pattern of cherry blossoms which were already on the original book cover. I also created 10 separate bookmarks for each volumes with each women look like they are enjoying their freedom.
